Discover how an act of obedience will bring you more than enough for your household & still have plenty left over to help others.

The story of "Elijah and the Widow woman" shows how an act of obedience can bring about an abundant blessing.

(Read) 1 Kings 17:1-15 "Elijah and the Widow woman"

What can we learn from Elijah and the widow woman? Elijah had a need & his natural resources were drying up. There was a drought in the land. The ravens had stopped coming and the brook was drying up. The Lord gave him specific instructions on what to do for provision. When we are in need of something, such as provision, we need to find out what God word says to do and do it. Elijah was given instructions by the Lord, but it would take an act of obedience and faith to carry it out. When God gives us instructions, through his word what to do, then we are to take the first step of faith and then God can bring the blessing to pass.

I’m sure Elijah was thinking, did he say a widow woman was going to provide for me?  When we look at our natural resources, what we have in our hands, we can’t see what God can do supernaturally with them.  Our first step toward provision is obedience and our next step is following through.  It doesn’t matter what it looks like in the natural.  Elijah could have questioned the Lord and said, “How is a widow woman going to provide for me”?  However, he didn’t question God and he went to the city and found the widow woman and her son there.  Elijah sees the widow woman and approaches her and follows through in his act of obedience.  The woman replies and basically tells him what she is doing.  She says, “I only have enough for me and my son and we are going to eat it and then die”.  This woman had lost all hope and was now in fear.  Whenever we get in fear we lose our hope.

This woman had specific instruction to follow, which we find in verse thirteen.  13. Then Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go, do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake from it first and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son.  She was not to fear, make Elijah a cake first and then she could make one for herself and her son. Wait, did you catch that, make him (Elijah) a cake first, then make one for herself and her son?  The woman said there was only enough for one cake.   However, Elijah said in verse fourteen, 14."For thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain on the face of the earth.' "15.So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and her household ate for many days.

The first thing that will happen when we trust God with our needs is fear will creep in. When we trust only in our natural resources, then we are not trusting God. Why? Because in the natural we can only see what we have in our hands.  When we trust God we have to believe by faith that we have it, before we see it. (Heb 11:1.Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen).  The next thing we have to realize is that we must take care of what he considers important first. The widow woman had to do what the prophet said to do first, and in the order that the Prophet told her.  She was to make the prophet his cake first, and then she could make one for herself and her son.  She had to stand in faith, because in the natural she couldn’t see how she and her son were going to eat too. But, out of her obedience and faith came an abundant blessing. She had more than enough.

This widow gave out of lack, not abundance.  She was literally willing to sacrifice what little she had and trust that there would be enough for her and her son too.  When we are obedient and willing we will eat the good of the land (Isa 1:19).  When we break our alabaster box, whatever that maybe, it becomes a sweet sacrifice to the Lord and he will honor our sacrifice. Why? Because we are then trusting him as our only source. When we die to ourselves, we will become alive in him.   The widow tended to someone else’s need, before her own.  We have to give up what we want, in order for the Lord to be glorified and the kingdom of heaven to be magnified.  If we are relying on natural resources, our brooks could dry up and our food supply could run out.  God will take our natural and mix it with our faith and produce the supernatural.

Perhaps, financially you have nothing to give. When the enemy attacks your finances, he is attempting to stop you in your tracks.  He knows you have needs and he knows you need money to pay the bills and live.  The widow woman was willing to share what little she had with the prophet.  It’s when you are willing to give what you have, not knowing how God will take care of your need, that will activate the blessing.

Whatever, the Lord tells you to do, do it and do it willing.  See, when the enemy sees that you are not attached to anything and you are trusting God totally, he will stop attacking you in that area of need. God may or may not use that person that you are blessing, it doesn’t matter he will get the blessing to you another way.  In fact, give and don’t expect anything in return from that person. The bible is clear make your requests know to God.

What are you trusting the Lord for?  Are you in fear or are you standing in faith?  Are you willing to do first what’s important to Him?  We can do a lot of good things, but ultimately it will come down to what are we doing to glorify God and build the kingdom of heaven?   Do we trust him at his word? When we glorify him, in all that we do, and then he will take care of ALL our needs.  If we delight ourselves in the Lord, he will give us the desires of our heart.  We need to follow His instructions and put our total trust in Him.  Our obedience will bring blessings into our lives as well as others.

How does God want to use you? What is he asking of you to do? When you show the enemy that you are totally trusting God, he’ll realize it and move on. Hit him where it hurts. If he is stealing from you, steal from him.  Giving is the best way to overcome lack.  What do you have to give today?  Ask the Lord to show you what you can give.  Ask him to show you where your talents & gifting can be used to glorify Him.  Listen to what he tells you, and do it.  Watch what he will do when you are willing and obedient to his word.
